Wine from the birthplace of Zinfandel

For generations our family has grown Crljenak Kaštelanski — the grape the world knows as Zinfandel — on the slopes where its story began.

Our legacy

Nestled in the hills above the Dalmatian coast, Winery Kovač is more than a winery — it is a legacy. Our family has cultivated the art of winemaking for more than a century, and every bottle of Putalj carries the terroir of one small, extraordinary hill.

Quality and authenticity, crafted with passion and expertise by our family — from vine to glass.

Our story

One hill, recorded since 852.

Above Kaštel Sućurac, beneath the old church of St George, the hill of Putalj has carried vines since the early Middle Ages — its name first written down in the charter of Croatian Duke Trpimir in 852.

This is where our family has grown wine for more than a century. Stone, salt wind and Adriatic sun shape two indigenous reds — Crljenak Kaštelanski, the original Zinfandel, and its descendant Plavac Mali. Every bottle is crafted by winemaker Anton Kovač and family, from pruning to cork.

“There is absolutely no substitute for love and dedication to your craft.”

Our wines

The original & the heir

Two indigenous reds, one bloodline — the father the world renamed Zinfandel, and Plavac Mali, his Dalmatian son.

01The original

Zinfandel

Kaštelanski Crljenak

Our signature red — rich, structured and bold, made from the very grape the world calls Zinfandel and Kaštela calls its own. Dark berries, pepper and warm Mediterranean herbs over firm, sun-ripened tannin.
